Small Group Lesson:
The created order (God’s blueprint): Genesis 2:1-3 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation."

Q: Do you remember a time in the past month when you felt very tired?
Q: Do you remember a time in the past month when you felt rested and refreshed?

Sometimes we do not rest because...
  • We are afraid of other peoples’ opinions of us.
  • We are afraid of silence. Ceasing the busyness of our life causes us to reflect on or realize an unpleasant reality. Work because a type of distraction.
  • We are afraid of our family—we are afraid of connecting with our family or we do not know how to connect with them so we stay busy.
  • We are afraid of failure—we think that if we pause things will fall apart.

Christians rest to trust God. Read Psalm 127:1-2 "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep."

Q: Considering the reasons above, why don’t you rest?

Christians rest to focus on God, trust God, and to be rejuvenated to serve God. Christian rest should make us happy in God.

Psalm 86:4 "Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul."

Some things are restful while others are merely numbing.

Q: What is truly restful for you?
Q: Do you rest through things that help you focus on and enjoy God? What was your experience?
Q: Take some time for each person in the group (together or in partners) to share a plan to begin a pattern of rest. How will you rest yearly, weekly, and daily?
